Bristol MAG will be holding a day of action in support of the new mobile phone penalties on the City Centre in Bristol on the 10thMarch on Bristol City Centre At 12.00 noon.
From next Tuesday (February 27), the existing £30 fine will increase to £60 and three penalty points. Any cases that reach court could involve discretionary disqualification and a maximum fine of £1,000 or, in the case of the driver of a bus, coach or heavy goods vehicle, £2,500.
The warning comes on the back of a national campaign launched on January 22 by the Department for Transport to raise awareness of Section 26 of the Road Safety Act 2007, which provides for the offences of using a hand held mobile phone whilst driving and failing to have proper control of a vehicle, which could include operating a hands-free kit.
National research shows that whilst 92 per cent of people agree with the law, 21 per cent of drivers admit to breaking it. The hope is that the tougher penalties will act as the deterrent. New drivers are being warned that six points, the equivalent of two phone calls, within two years of passing the driving test means the licence will be revoked.
Employers could also face prosecution if they require employees to make or receive mobile calls while driving as it is an offence to cause or permit the use of a hand-held mobile when driving and cause or permit a driver not to have proper control of a vehicle. Since the original law was introduced in December 2003, a total of 7,021 motorists have been caught using their mobile phone whilst driving in Avon and Somerset. Avon & Somerset Police
