Slippit Inn Rally

Glos MAG is holding their annual rally over the Easter weekend of 21st -23rd March. NOT as indicated in "The Road" as being in February!

"Time is running very short to get your tickets. Online pre-book deadline is 7 March. I may accept them later in the post.

Also 7 March is the deadline for prearranging cars (blue badge ones as well), as we need to get the labels for them back to you. You WILL NOT be allowed on site in a 4-wheeled vehicle without one of these labels in the window. Den"

So if you haven’t already got your tickets, get in contact with Den and book your place, and enjoy the convivial company with Real Ale and Live Music. A mere £8 is all it costs if you pre-book, or you can turn up on the day and pay £10.

Mid Wilts MAG

It was agreed to have this years Christmas do the first Saturday in December (we already have two bands booked) with a daytime ride out hopefully to Bath dogs and cats home (tbc). Also a summer run to the Wiltshire Wildlife hospital (date to be confirmed). Please come along and support your local MAG group. – Taff

Somerset Bike Safety Forum

Bristol bikers ride into Somerset and kill themselves.

This was one of the startling facts to come out of the Somerset Motorcycle Forum meeting held in Bridgwater in January.

The meeting was organised by Jim Newman of Somerset County Council’s Road Safety Partnership. It’s an ongoing series of forums aimed at reducing the number of motorcycle road deaths and injuries in the county. More than a quarter of road deaths in the county during 2007 were bikers, nine of whom were in their 30’s with several coming from the Bristol area.

At the meeting were representative from a number of interested parties, including the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG), the police, off-road bikers, the ambulance and the fire brigade, while the meeting was hosted by Bridgwater Fire Station, and chaired by Jim Newman.

During the meeting, a topbox full of ideas and statistics were discussed. For instance, the A38 which runs through the county has had 723 casualties over the last five years. To combat this, the authorities were pursuing a Red Route Programme for the road by improving signage, increasing line markings and offering education workshops for motorists.

MAG produced a leaflet it has been distributing to bikers called Ride To Live, Live To Ride, which is full of common sense ideas to reduce the risk of an accident.

Avon and Somerset Police highlighted its BikeSafe Days, which offer riders a short course to improve their riding skills based at the headquarters in Portishead, along with three Ride To Arrive weekend courses in Bristol, which aim to further develop a rider’s awareness and abilities.

The brutal statistics behind all these efforts reveal that male motorcyclists are more likely to have an accident than women. Young male riders of scooters and mopeds are the likeliest to come to grief on the roads, and 30-something men have disproportionately higher chance of killing themselves than other riders. Bikers over 70 years of age are the least likely to have a crash, which just goes to show you can’t beat experience.

If you would like to take part in the next Motorcycle Forum, then contact Jim Newman on 01823 423430. To report oil spillages and raised manhole covers call 0845 345 9155.
