Urban Motorcycle Design Handbook

TFL

MAG is delighted to announce that Transport for London (TfL) have finally published the 'Urban Motorcycle Design Handbook'. The handbook is aimed at highlighting the need for road safety scheme designers to properly consider the interests and safety of all PTW riders – including riders of mopeds, scooters and motorbikes.

Publication of this guide follows more than two years of work by TfL's Motorcycle Safety Working Group, which was initiated, and mostly driven, by our Campaigns and Policy Adviser, Dr Leon Mannings.

MAG Chair Selina Lavender has welcomed publication of the Handbook. "This is a great step forward for riders of all types of motorcycles as it is a really powerful tool for us and any biker to use to raise awareness of our interests and safety among Road Scheme Designers. It also presents real-life examples of road schemes to highlight aspects of design that have the potential to create adverse impacts on the efficiency and safety of road use by every type of motorcyclist. There is, of course, room for improvement, but I have been assured by TfL that this is a 'live' document in order for refinements to be made in due course."

Selena added: "TfL have also started running training courses for local authority scheme designers in London along with their own designers. The one-day sessions are based on the handbook and this is another TfL initiative that we welcome and hope the courses continue."
